Nonkululeko – or “Nku”, as she is known in her home country of South Africa – is a successful business executive who has been active in steel, telecommunications and finance. She was appointed CEO of international mining group IchorCoal in March 2014. Forbes included Nonkululeko in their list of the world’s most powerful women in 2012.
Nku has a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and a Master of Science degree from the California Institute of Technology. She also has an MBA from the Open University Business School.
After first working in various positions with IBM in the US and South Africa (1986–98), she moved to Alliance Capital Management where she headed financial services. In 2008, Nonkululeko was appointed executive director of ArcelorMittal South Africa where she remained for six years, after which she became IchorCoal’s CEO.
“I have always been someone who could drive myself,” is a statement from Nku that matches the vision of The Sapinda Rainbow Foundation like a glove: We want to attract youngsters who can find their own self-confidence, inspire other people and create a brighter future for themselves and others. We are honoured to have Nku on our Advisory Committee and are particularly grateful for her personal mentorship of some of our Sapinda Rainbow Ambassadors.
